    Quoted from Squaremans.com
Taken from the most excellent squaremans.com, pimped out by one of the titans of the gaming industry, Mr [info]wickedthought
For context, the author is running DnD 0 in honor of Gary Gygax's death and discussing the rules from 1971.

"The rules themselves were barely there. You had to make it all up. This put so much responsibility on the GM. He had to be entertaining, imaginative, fair, rational. In many ways the steady march away from original D&D has been a sustained effort to remove the effects of a bad GM on the game. The more game elements are objectively determined, written down in books, the less you have to rely on the GM. The less you need a really good GM to run the game. And yes, the more of a science it becomes, and less of an art. Running this game was an art form and only a few people could do it really well. There’s something magical about that. Newer versions become more systematized and therefore more people can play. Mediocre GMs can run good games. But, if I’m being honest with myself, something of the magic is lost. That feeling that most of this game lived in your mind. Because of that, I think, it was more real. As more and more of the game lived in the rules and on character sheets, it became a game instead of a world in your head."

Perhaps the best gaming quote evar
    From the blog www.squaremans.com

"My friend Jim is one of the best GM’s I’ve ever played with. He’s a tactical genius and can do things with 7 Orcs that would cause the Fellowship of the Ring to shit their pants. I love Jim’s games and look forward to his 4E game."

    In case anyone cares
One of those little green squeezey lime juice things has enough lime juice in it to flavor 46 cans of diet pepsi.

    That is all.

    No on Proposition 93
While those of you who know me known of my loathful hatred for term limits in California, you might be surprised to think I'd be against prop 93. Well, first off, 93 doesn't make a real reform to the term limit system, it is a cheap attempt for those currently in office to circumvent the rules that are currently in place.
What is little known is that with prop 93, all legislators would be allowed to "reset" their term limit clocks, allowing them another 12 years in office in addition to the time they've already served.
In addition to all these things, I am currently interviewing for a campaign position with San Mateo County Supervisor Jerry Hill for a prospective run for the State Assembly. However, the current Assemblyman Gene Mullin would be termed out under the current term limit restrictions. If prop 93 passes, Mr. Mullin would be free to run for 6 additional terms in his seat. Since Mullin and Hill are personal friends and political allies, Jerry won't run against his incumbent friend.
So please, vote no on prop 93 cause Joe needs a job. Oh, and yeah, it's bad for California too.

    Quote of the Day
So, on our way back from Folsom, the half-asleep [info]barelyproper uttered the following:

"I don't want to pet the turkies, they are attacking people in the cemetary."

    She claims it makes sense.

ok, I just now got why I had to watch the two-part of the doctor before being able to watch the most recent one.... I feel kinda dumb.

Though I find it somewhat lame that the device would take the same form upon activation.

from [info]wickedthought(one day I'll learn how to do lj tags)

So, I'm including Player and Game Master chapters for Houses of the Blooded and I realized what I had just written would have made a great Play Dirty chapter. Specifically, a follow-up on the "play dirty for players" chapter. That's right, more goodies for you player-types.

    interesting musings
So, I was speaking with one of my professors the other day, and the topic turned to the "costs" of economy of scale. I made the observation that as any organization increases in size, it gains saving in efficiency of operations at the apparent expense of personalized customer service. I also wondered aloud to my professor, who holds a PhD in Economics, what that mysterious point that transforms a small enterprise into a large and unresponsive one. He didn't have any idea, though said it would be an interesting research topic, to which as an amateur economist I felt warm fuzzies to have someone of my professor's stature to support one of my ideas.

This relates back to several other discussions that I have had recently about the responsiveness of the government to its citizens. The traditional wisdom is that private business is always more efficient than the government. However, with the rash of enormous corporate mismanagement scandals still surfacing, I am beginning to think that it might not actually be the case.
If anything, the problems associated with "big government" are I think endemic to "big anything".

    another excellent quote
I know I'm not going to understand women. I'll never understand how you can take boiling hot wax, pour it onto your upper thigh, rip the hair out by the root, and still be afraid of a spider.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

    Amusing Quote
"In D&D, fighting takes forever. Ten seconds of game time takes four hours of real time. Meanwhile, seducing the barmaid takes one roll. Just one roll. Obviously, this is a game system written by virgins."
